The judges really threw the contestants for a loop this week with a live ingredient being featured in the mystery box. Inside this week’s box were live California prawns! Were the chefs able to handle the challenge (spoiler alert: Monti freaked out)?
The Best
Becky – grilled prawns with salsa verde and saffron rice
Christine – spot prawns with pineapple broth
David – spot prawn ceviche
Congratulations to David on his first mystery box win! As the winner of the mystery box challenge, David got a HUGE advantage in the night’s elimination challenge.
The Elimination Test
The three ingredient choices for the elimination test were bacon, corn and beets. After revealing the choices, the judges also revealed to David that ever contestant would have to create a dessert for this test. Not wanting to choose bacon and make it easy for everyone, David decided to choose corn for their ingredient. But his advantage wasn’t done yet, the judges gave David three examples of dishes he could make with corn. WHAT A HUGE ADVANTAGE. Too bad David squandered it all: after deciding to make a rice pudding, HE FORGOT HIS RICE IN THE PANTRY. Not the time to screw up, David. So, he did what anyone would do and asked everyone in the kitchen for some. Becky ended up having some and made the decision to share. With everyone settled, it was time to get down to business.
David – corn and rice pudding with salted caramel sauce. (“unedibly disgusting”)
Becky – popcorn and panna cotta (whimsical)
Christine – corn and coconut pudding (simple, but great)
Monti – corn souffle (delicious)
Felix – corn profiteroles (looked like “cat poop”)
Frank – corn budino with chocolate ganache (delicious)
Josh – corn creme brulee (terrible)
Frank and Becky had the top two dishes. The judges chose Becky as the top chef of the night. Not all is lost for Frank though, as he and Becky will both be team captains in the next group challenge. The bottom three chefs were Josh, Felix and David. Josh gave a disappointing return performance. David let his advantage go to waste and Felix cooked the worst dish of her time in the competition. Josh has safe (YES), leaving David and Felix in the bottom two. And the chef with the most disastrous dessert was…Felix Fang. The early frontrunner’s time in the competition came to a close tonight as she left the competition. Honestly, that was a huge surprise. I was definitely expecting David to go.
Next week: GORDON GOES CRAZY.
If David would have executed the recipe correctly, he would have had what sounded like a very scrumptious desert, along with Josh. I can’t think of many things better than crème brulee. Corn custard would be the base, but I can’t imagine how one would make that to begin with. I would have had to wait a few days to watch this episode, but I brought my Galaxy Tab, and my wife watched it on her iPad while we were on the road. I love that the Dish Remote Access app and Sling Adapter at home can give us the ability to watch TV on the go, because we LOVE this show, and didn’t want to wait. I called my Dish coworker and asked him if he was surprised Ryan didn’t make it, and of course he wasn’t either.
